Morning Bad Breath - Paper

First, let’s look at the causes of morning bad breath

1. VSC is the biggest cause of morning bad breath

There are various causes of bad breath. There are various diseases such as gum disease, lung disease, rhinitis, etc. However, 80-90% of bad breath is caused by problems in the mouth.

Among these, the biggest cause of morning breath is volatile sulphur compounds called VSC.

Volatile means that it is light and easy to spread. Sulfur? What does sulfur smell like? It smells like rotting eggs. It is also the smell that comes from rotting food.

Because they are present in high concentrations in the mouth, they cause bad morning breath.

The concentration of VSC is especially high if you have gum disease. VSC concentration varies depending on the deep gap between the gums and teeth and the amount of blood flowing between the gaps.

And among the bacteria located on the back of the tongue, the more bacteria related to bad breath, the higher the VSC concentration.

2. Why is the concentration particularly high only in the morning?

VSC concentration increases when you eat a lot of protein. For example, the level rises significantly after eating protein powder, eggs, milk, or meat. But even though we definitely brush our teeth before going to bed at night! Why are these VSC concentrations higher in the morning?

This is because saliva secretion decreases when you sleep. This changes the activity of bacteria. Saliva itself contains antibacterial and antifungal substances. They are like soldiers fighting germs. And as saliva flows down, it removes debris from the mouth. Because saliva secretion decreases at night, bacteria become more active and the concentration of VSCs in the mouth increases.

And as saliva secretion decreases, bacteria that spoil food become more active. So, the decayed debris in the mouth works hard to produce VSC.

In the next episode, we will learn how to get rid of bad morning breath.
